Using Windposts as ‘Propped Cantilevers’ can considerably reduce the deflection of a post whilst increasing the loading capacity when compared with a simply supported post.

Propped Cantilevers will need a large base connection of at least four fixing bolts and a standard simply supported head cleat.

As with parapet posts, a large base connection is needed in order to resist the ‘bending moment’ created.

Occasionally this may be impractical to incorporate within the floor construction, for example, floors without screed finishes. As always, our Technical Design team will be pleased to calculate the ‘bending moment’ for you and advise you on the size of base plate required.

All Wincro Propped Cantilever Windposts are suffixed with F in their product code to denote the fixed base connection, for example, WP5C8560F.

Assistance

All our Windposts can be designed and supplied as propped cantilevers. They are available in a number of styles, thicknesses and sizes to suit structural loading requirements. A selection of our safe working load tables are available online and our Technical Design team will be happy to provide solutions to suit your exact situation.

Propped Cantilever Posts can be designed to fix to all types of structure and our Technical Design team will design specific connections to the frame according to the demands of the site, type of windpost, structure, fixing type and loading requirements.

All Propped Cantilever Windposts are supplied complete with vertically adjustable ties to suit coursing levels and necessary fixing bolts.

T-Type Base Fixing

This heavy duty base type ‘wraps’ around the structural edge and uses offset fixing holes to accommodate bolts where needed.

Consideration should be given to the fixing type and its position for all types of propped cantilever windpost, especially when fixed to concrete frame structures.

Typically, WBEB Expansion Bolts should be 100mm minimum from the edge and 150mm apart. Closer edge distances can be achieved using cast-in channels.

Flat Gusseted Base Fixing

This heavy duty flat base design incorporates a structural welded gusset to the base which extends into the floor of the building.

It is important that suitable floor finishes can conceal the height of the gusset and our Technical Design team will be happy to discuss this fixing arrangement to suit your requirements.

Again, consideration should be given to the fixing type and its position for all types of propped cantilever windpost, especially when fixed to concrete frame structures.

Stainless Steel

All Wincro windposts are manufactured from high quality grade 1.4301 (304) stainless steel to ensure durability and long life. Our windposts can also be manufactured from grade 1.4401(316) stainless steel for corrosive environments and galvanised mild steel for internal use.

Design Service

Occasionally, exacting information for Windposts is not specified and our Technical Design team is available to assist with the correct selection and specification following receipt of some basic information or drawings. Our windpost design sheet (available to download here) will assist with this process, together with the wind loading information for the building.

Design drawings can be provided and our assistance ranges from simple guidance to a fully computerised design service with advice on the appropriate use of windposts or special designs.
